About the Show:

“A New Death”
Written by C.S. Wyatt 
Directed by John Henry Steelman 

A clerical error, and a pushy mother, results in Harlan Howe, an out-of-work salesman,being called in to interview for the position of Messenger of Death. Through a series of mishaps, Regional Death 143 is required to hire Harlan and train him for the position. The first play in the “Heaven, Incorporated” series, “A New Death” imagines how Heaven and the divine might work as a typical corporation, asking questions about why humans
die and the nature of the Creator’s plan. Was the hiring of Harlan a simple mistake, or are all events part of a greater order we cannot comprehend?

Casting:

This show has a flexible cast of 8-20+ actors! There are roles for all genders and a wide range of ages including a few roles for teens! Most minor characters are gender and age fluid.

Primary Characters:

▪︎ Harlan Howe - A lowly salesman in his mid-40s… and a new Messenger of Death. Searching for a job that lasts, he stumbles into one. Harlan slouches throughout most of the play and is the visual opposite of his new manager, Regional Death 143
▪︎ Regional Death - One of many Regional Managers of Messengers of Death for Peter & Company, a mid-level executive recruited during the Civil War. A gentleman who wears white suits and gloves. Loves puns, considers himself witty.
▪︎ Gabriel - An Archangel with style and class. Perfectly tailored suits, sunglasses, and a cool fashion sense. Gabe’s name means “God is My Strength” — The Herald or The Messenger.
▪︎ Grim Reaper - Azrael, Angel of Death, known as, “Grimmy.” Azrael means “The Helper,” an odd choice for the being that frees souls from the physical realm. Azrael, having been created specifically to help guide human souls after The Fall of Man, is the youngest Archangel.

Minor Characters:

▪︎ Harlan’s Mother - Mother of a lowly salesman. Mother lives on the couch, watching game shows and reruns. It might be 1982, but for her, it is still 1965, and her apartment reflects this.
▪︎ Receptionist - Temp from Hell. Well, not really, but with similar results. In their late 20s or early 30s, Receptionist is bitter and frustrated, not having found a job
▪︎ Tailor - Makes Harlan more presentable.
▪︎ Homeless Person - A pure soul who recognizes Harlan as a Messenger of Death.
▪︎ Nuns One and Two - They operate a weekly game of Bingo.
▪︎ Bingo Winner - Lucky Bingo player, possibly off-stage.
▪︎ Robbery Victim - A potential robbery victim.
▪︎ Thugs One and Two - Two unskilled, fumbling robbers.
▪︎ Dark Messenger - An employee of Hell; marks souls for collection.
▪︎ Kid - Selling chocolate bars for school.
▪︎ John (Senior Man) - A man about to say goodbye to his wife.
▪︎ Lizzie (Senior Woman) - John’s wife. She is ready to cross over. She transforms to a “younger self” after meeting Grimmy.
▪︎ Job Applicant - A new interviewee.
▪︎ Announceer - Unseen voice of television.
