"Ishmael", by Daniel Quinn, is a philosophical novel where a man answers an ad seeking a student and meets a highly intelligent gorilla named Ishmael who teaches him about the destructive cultural myths of "Takers" (modern civilization) versus the sustainable ways of "Leavers" (tribal cultures). Ishmael explains that the fundamental myth driving civilization is the belief that humans are destined to rule the world and are exempt from the laws of nature, leading to the degradation of the environment and a desperate need for humanity to return to a natural and harmonious way of living.
