Join legendary environmental journalist Rocky Barker and defenders of the Camas National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) on Saturday, April 12, to discuss the implications of Senate Joint Memorial 104 recently passed by the Idaho Legislature. Tracy Casselman, retired leader of the Southeast Idaho National Wildlife Refuge Complex, and Zoe Jorgensen, Board Chair of the Friends of Camas NWR, will complete the panel, to be moderated by State Committeewoman Jan Brown.

This monthly forum will be held at the Idaho Falls Public Library from 3:30-5:30 pm and is free to the public.

SenateJoint Memorial 104 seems relatively harmless on the surface as it seeks to expedite a federal Section 404 permit request to "clean" Camas Creek inside the refuge to benefit local irrigators. Unfortunately, this memorial ALSO asks Congress and the incoming director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to transfer ownership and administration of this important federal refuge to the State of Idaho.

Up until now, Congress has resisted state efforts to seize federal land and water rights as these resources truly belong to all Americans, not just Idahoans. Transferring such valuable wildlife habitats from federal to state ownership would be a dangerous precedent as it threatens both Tribal and federal water rights, and results in less legal protection for the refuge itself.
