But it’s a great stop during a summer road trip!What to expect?The experience of staying in this modest guest room is like sleeping in a kesähuone in aitta, or the summer room in the outside house, surrounded by artworks. Guest facilities include 2 single beds (size 80 x 200cm), 4 pillows, a sheepskin rug for warmth and cosiness, mosquito mesh protection, robes, woollen socks, and artist-book reading materials. Towels are provided, but be prepared to walk across the yard to the shower room. This living space must be left in the same condition as it was assigned upon arrival.The guest room is for resting, chilling, pondering, and sleeping—we ask that you don’t bring pets inside, and refrain from eating or drinking inside, so as not to accidentally damage the artworks.Instead, you can do this in the adjacent room, where you’ll find our summer tea room. It’s open to the general public from 12–16, Thursday to Sunday, and serves drinks and snacks for purchase. There are many chairs, tables, and other seating possibilities there, and it’s a good place to relax. You’ll also find artworks and the Mustarinda summer shop, which sells artist-designed souvenirs. Here you’ll find a basic guest kitchen station: there’s a fridge you can use, a kettle for hot water, cups, a collection of teas made from local plants, a french press for coffee, and jars of instant porridge for breakfast. Note: open flames, including burning candles or incense, are not allowed in the barn.If you like to cook with fire, you’ll find a public kota (indoor fire pit) nearby (~100m walk through uneven terrain). If this is your plan, please check the day’s wildfire warning beforehand: https://en.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/wildfire-warningAcross the yard approximately ~20m away is a very cosy huussi (dry toilet) and a water station, for washing hands, and filling up the water jug. There’s also a shower room with hot water, and we light the wooden sauna on Saturday evenings. You will be provided with a robe, but we encourage you to bring shower shoes for bathing and crossing the yard.Good to knowThe nearest supermarkets are in Hyrynsalmi 25km away: K-Market and S-Market. It’s a good idea to bring along food that can be grilled or easily warmed for dinner and snacking.It could be challenging for people with limitations around mobility to stay in the guest house—there are steps without railings before entering the barn, steps and thresholds before entering the huusi, and the surrounding yard has uneven and changing terrain. The barn room door is quite narrow—90cm wide. It doesn’t really get dark, so you might like to travel with an eye mask if you wish to sleep.There are a few weeks in the summer when entering the surrounding old growth forest means confronting dense swarms of mosquitos. We encourage you to bring protective clothing and take precautions if you wish to experience forest encounters. It’s also a good idea to regularly check for ticks after being outside.The room can’t be locked from the outside, but inside is a security latch. Mustarinda is in a very remote location and crimes are rare, but we encourage you to consider what valuables you bring, as you are responsible for their safety.During the visit to Mustarinda, the barn room guest is an independent guest. They agree to be responsible for their own actions as they pertain to the local community and laws and regulations.Mustarinda does not offer travel or health insurance, personal injury, or theft insurance for barn room guests, and should the guest desire this coverage, they will need to obtain it personally.About the artworkMichaela CaskováBnB (Bed in Barn), 2017–26InstallationThe BnB (Bed in Barn) installation brings together more than a decade of Michaela’s work with weather notes, foraging, and wildcrafting. The space hosts textile artworks made from naturally dyed yarns, created using plants, mushrooms, and other materials gathered from the landscape of Paljakka hill around Mustarinda. Wall hangings, pillows, mosquito nets, curtains, bedcovers, colour charts of the hill, and weather diaries combine to form an immersive interior where visitors can encounter the outside environment from within, as visitors, or overnight guests.The artwork traces and maps subtle and visible changes in the local environment, capturing the ongoing impact of climate crisis.
