ABOUT THE SHOW: Performance Dates: August 28-30 and September 4-6 Directors: Jeff Bickford, Natalie Dunn, Kimmy Rose, and Jack Wildwood Producer: Holly Biracree Assistant Producer: Hilde Thoeni Synopsis: A humorous and dramatic play comprised of four vignettes as each group visits the Hotel California Suite 203-204. Audiences will be treated to a lively mix of comedy, heartfelt drama, touching moments, and playful slapstick — all wrapped in a feel-good experience that makes for a delightful day at the theater. - Visitor from New York – Hannah, a magazine writer, is joined by her ex-husband, the question being with whom should their daughter spend the next six months? The banter flies fast and furious, but Hannah's well-wrought artifice crumbles as her fears take hold. - Visitor from Philadelphia – Millie arrives at the suite to catch Marvin, supposedly devoted partner, "en flagrante delicto" after a drunken night with a sex worker. - Visitors from London – Academy Award nominee Diana returns from the ceremony empty-handed to her husband, Sidney, whose homosexuality will be no comfort tonight. - Visitors from Chicago – Two couples ending a disastrous vacation they should not have shared. CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS: Note: The age listed is the character’s STAGE AGE (i.e., the actor need not be that age, just be able to pass in that range while on stage). (Gender listed is gender that character identifies as) All auditioners must be 18+ -- Visitor from New York -- Hannah Warren (Female, 35-50) – Manhattan workaholic, intelligent and sophisticated whose goal is to retrieve her daughter Jenny, 17, after she left to stay with her dad. She is sarcastic with quick witty remarks and has to decide at the end what is truly the best for Jenny. William Warren (Male, 35-50) – Hollywood Screenwriter, divorced twice, athletic who has focused on improving his health since the divorce from Hannah. His goal is to convince Hannah to admit their daughter would be better if she stayed with him. -- Visitor from Philadelphia -- Marvin Michaels (30-50) – Business person who consumed a bottle of vodka and gets a suite to celebrate Marvin and Millie’s first trip to California. Unfortunately, Marvin isn’t the only one in the suite...or the bed...when Millie shows up. Millie Michaels (30-50) – Devoted and loving partner to Marvin. Millie shows up to the hotel and is dealing with the distress of the airline having lost the luggage with Millie’s dress for the Bar Mitzvah. All Millie wants to do is take a nap in the bedroom, however it is occupied with another... Bunny (20s-30s) – A mostly comatose 18+ sex worker. Must be comfortable in intimate night clothes (no nudity) as well as comfortable with being moved and have the ability to lay still. Requires less time commitment for rehearsals. -- Visitors from London -- Sidney Nichols (Male, 30-40) – British, witty, a closeted antique dealer who is recently becoming more indiscreet about his sexual orientation. Diana Nichols (Female, 30-40) – British, does her best to mask her low confidences. First-time Best Actress Oscar nominee. Although she knows she doesn’t stand a chance she’s hopeful to win the award, perhaps it could revive her career or even her marriage. -- Visitors from Chicago -- The four actors should have similar enough stage ages (35-50) to be plausible as long-time friends who would go on vacation together for multiple weeks. There is physical/slapstick comedy or hand-to-hand stage combat for all four characters in multiple instances, and Beth is carried or "carried" multiple times. Physical descriptions can be ironic and we will cast gender-inclusively. Due to the need to safely choreograph all of the (mostly slapstick) events, actors will be asked to be off-book by the time we have the stage for rehearsals. Mort Hollender (Male, 35-50) – “That wasn't tennis out there, that was war." Male-presenting spouse of Beth. Self-described as having some "meat on his bones". Both bumbling and menacing, with a short fuse. Beth Hollender (Female, 35-50) – “This is Beverly Hills, they'll probably send a psychiatrist." Female-presenting spouse of Mort. The most fluent in sarcasm and swearing. Stu Franklyn (Male, 35-50) – “Don't yell at my wife while I'm carrying your wife." Male-presenting spouse of Gert. Mort describes Stu and Gert as "two skinny people". Trying and almost succeeding in taking charge. Gert Franklyn (Female, 35-50) – “Ohhh . . . Stu . . . did I pass out?" Female-presenting spouse of Stu. Alternately competes and allies with Beth. Stylish and probably knows exactly what she's doing. NOTES ABOUT REHEARSAL SCHEDULE • Expect 1-2 weeknight rehearsals and 1 weekend rehearsal per week. • Cast members will only be scheduled for the rehearsals related to their own vignette and will not be required to attend rehearsals for other scenes.
