Everyone is welcome.About this EventHumber Street Gallery is pleased to present I am black because I come from the earth’s inside, an exhibition by Zivarna Murphy. This new commission is an invitation to enter an alternatively conceived shell grotto: a space for considering how this architectural form might be reclaimed and imagined otherwise.Ornamental sites of display, wealth and status, shell grottoes became fashionable within British estates and gardens during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Often shaped by women whose labour went largely unrecorded, these spaces are entangled with notions of class, gender and Britishness. Murphy enters this layered history through making, re-forming the grotto with locally gathered boulder clay, hand-formed ceramics, and sculptural weaving.Taking its form from the cave, the grotto carries deep associations with retreat, ritual, and transformation. Moving between the histories held in the grotto and her own experience, Murphy approaches making as a process of discovery, through which the grotto can be encountered anew.Since March 2026, Zivarna Murphy has been supported as part of , a studio residency at Juice Studios. The residency provided an artist working in Hull, who would otherwise not have access to a studio, with seven months of cost-covered studio space and dedicated time to develop and expand their creative practice. Zivarna’s residency culminates in this presentation of work. - **Event URL**: https://allevents.in/hull/exhibition-launch-event-i-am-black-because-i-come-from-the-earths-inside/100002000994171432 - **Event Categories**: exhibitions, workshops, art - **Interested Audience**: - total_interested_count: 0 - **Event Highlights**: - Duration: 3 hours - Location: Humber Street Gallery - Languages: English ## Ticket Details - **Ticket Price Range**: min: 0, max: 0, currency: GBP ## Event venue details - **city**: Hull - **state**: EN - **country**: United Kingdom - **location**: Humber Street Gallery - **lat**: 53.7391876 - **long**: -0.3348234999999704 - **full address**: Humber Street Gallery, 64 Humber Street, Hull, United Kingdom ## Event gallery - **Alt text**: Exhibition launch event: I am black because I come from the earth's inside - **Image URL**: https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events10/banners/06b2a7977dcc0a33ad50b11976bdb83b800c4f1a3a39fac448f18c36bbd60ece-rimg-w1200-h800-dc080808-gmir.jpg?v=1789418777 ## FAQs - **Q**: When and where is Exhibition launch event: I am black because I come from the earth's inside being held? - **A:** Exhibition launch event: I am black because I come from the earth's inside takes place on Thu, 08 Oct, 2026 at 06:00 pm to Thu, 08 Oct, 2026 at 09:00 pm at Humber Street Gallery, 64 Humber Street, Hull, United Kingdom. - **Q**: Who is organizing Exhibition launch event: I am black because I come from the earth's inside? - **A:** Exhibition launch event: I am black because I come from the earth's inside is organized by Humber Street Gallery. - **Q**: Who is this event for? It is now a significant contributor to the contemporary visual arts offer in the north. Our ambition for Humber Street Gallery is to further develop the venue into a multi-artform and multi-functional creative centre, showcasing a wide range of art and activities providing something for everyone from visual art, dance, music to spoken word. Increasingly the space will be used to showcase more work by local as well as national and international practitioners. We also aim to develop more visual art programming that happens outside of the gallery in the city’s public spaces, in underused buildings and in local neighbourhoods." } ] } ] ```
