Caravan: a nomadic group, moving without a fixed destination, traveling with all that is needed.

Jazz has long shaped Reginald Madison’s life and practice. Raised in the South Side of Chicago, Madison was influenced by the vibrant local music scene at a young age. Musicians were the first artists Madison encountered and admired before discovering visual art, a term Madison might contest. For him, making is a fully immersive mind/body experience. The intuitive nature of improvisational jazz has deeply influenced his method of working off script.

Madison’s exhibition Caravan reflects this approach through works built from found and salvaged materials, where each piece is created and reworked by instinct rather than a fixed plan. The exhibition includes wall sculptures composed of wood from a defunct local factory, two series of abstract works on paper, including the 1990s suite In a Silent Way (a reference to Miles Davis’s 1969 studio album), and a never-before-exhibited 1986 painting, Caravan, of a live ensemble. On view throughout the 2026 Hudson Jazz Festival (October 2-4).
