About the event

Join EPIKS for a guided nature walk from St Georges Square to Snow Island
Explore how the natural history of Huddersfield is told through its trees, plants and wildlife.

About this Event

Our walk will start in St Georges Square and follow a circular route through town and down to the River Colne at Snow Island. We will stop to look at how the history of Huddersfield's landscape is evidenced in the trees and wildlife of the town. This walk is just under 3 miles and takes in a variety of terrain; town centre streets, side roads, towpaths and unsurfaced footpaths. Your guide can vary the route dependant on the individual needs of walkers and wheelchair users to ensure it is accessible. The pace will be very steady, and stops will be frequent. It is suitable for those who like a slow pace and frequent opportunities to talk.

The walk will be led by one of EPIKS ecologists, Gilly, who has a specialist knowledge of urban wild landscapes.

At Snow Island you will be given an insight into Snow Island's historical past and the current environmental restoration work taking place on this intriguing area of land. We will see how the landscape has changed since the first medieval mills that were built upstream at Kings Bridge, to its current role in the creation of the 'Huddersfield Riverside Nature Park'.

You are invited to join the conversation and add your stories as we walk. Share your relationship with Huddersfield's wild spaces and what they mean to you. Discover new ways of exploring the town and build a greater knowledge of how to interpret the landscape.

We will stop at Snow Island where there are several benches to rest and have a snack before returning to town. EPIKS will provide a hot drink and biscuits. Toilets are available across the road in the University of Huddersfield, Weavers Cafe. If you wish to end your walk here, we will make sure you know how to get back to the train and bus station.
