Huddersfield town centre will come alive this winter with a spectacular day of festive creativity, music, and immersive experiences as part of the Merry & Bright Winter Celebration — a free, family-friendly event designed to warm hearts and light up the season.
From 11am to 4:30pm, the Creative Piazza: Winter Worlds transforms the town into a hub of imagination and festive fun. Hosted in the Piazza (with indoor backup spaces), this vibrant programme includes...
✨ Festive storytelling with “Tell-Tale Hearts”
✨ A ride-on steam train for children and families
✨ Walkabout performances from Poppy Poppins and interactive samba sessions
✨ Christmas-themed puppetry by “The Daves”
✨ Creative workshops including printmaking (WYPW), textiles (Thread Republic), and elf decoration (Makerworld)
✨ Skating and face painting at the Skate Park
✨ Lantern displays created in advance by Collaborati, enhancing the evening’s light spectacle
Window displays across Piazza units will add a festive backdrop to the day’s activities, all supported by PACE and Kirklees Council.
From 12:00pm to 8:00pm, Byram Street will host a Christmas Market curated by Huddersfield BID, featuring local traders, festive food, and a tipi-style beer tent at the Parish Church end of the square. This area will later become the gathering point for the evening’s magical finale, taking place at 6:00pm.
As dusk falls, the town prepares for its signature Merry & Bright Moment. From 4:30pm, the public will gather on New Street to receive strings of lights, forming a glowing human chain through the town centre. At 5:30pm, the lights will be illuminated in unison — a moment captured by drone to showcase Huddersfield’s festive spirit.
Immediately following, Walk the Plank’s Fire Garden will ignite a trail of flaming beacons leading to St Peter’s Church, where a stunning mechanical fire sculpture and fire trees will light up the night. This immersive installation offers a magical setting for carolling and community gathering, inviting families to linger and celebrate together.
The event culminates in a warm, welcoming Beer & Carols gathering at the Parish Church, surrounded by fire-lit sculptures and festive cheer.
