Rope Mat Workshop

Join Laura from L & S Crafts for a relaxed, hands-on rope mat making workshop at the beautiful Howsham Mill between York and Malton.

In this sustainable craft workshop, you will learn how to turn retired climbing ropes into durable, practical rope mats. These can be used as doormats, and they also work well in campervans or boats.

This workshop is suitable for beginners. There will be a choice of patterns available to make. You will be guided step by step through the process, learning how to shape and finish your mat. At the end of the day, you will take home your own finished rope mat and the confidence to make more in the future.

All tools and equipment will be provided and there are two ticket options available.

• £40 – Bring Your Own Rope
  Bring a retired climbing rope that you would like to upcycle. This is a great option if you want to give old gear a new life. We recommend bringing a rope of ~10 mm diameter and 40+ m long, and washing it before the workshop! If you have any questions, message us via the "Contact" button below.
• £50 – Rope Provided
  Includes a retired climbing rope supplied for you to use on the day.

(The ropes used have been retired and are not suitable for climbling.)

The workshop can be quite physically demanding. If you would prefer to come with a partner and make one mat between two, please message us us via the "Contact" button below before booking.

We recommend that you wear comfortable clothing and footwear you don’t mind getting a bit dusty or muddy. You may also find it useful to bring a pair of gloves.

Hot drinks will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch to enjoy either indoors or outside in the lovely woodland surroundings.

The venue has free parking and composting toilets. Please note Howsham Mill itself is approximately 1/4 mile walk from the carpark along an uneven path.

Minimum age for participants is 18 years.
