This group from Rice University will bring together audiences from both classical music and metal together for a concert that is aimed toward both. They want to program heavy works for string quartet that evoke the energy, tone and expression of metal such as works by Shostakovich, Bartok, Ginastera, and so on. Additionally, one member, Maxwell Whittaker, will write a work for string quartet with live processing such as distortion to evoke timbres from metal music which they will achieve this using string pickups and Max MSP to control the effect parameters. Their goal is to show that these two genres are more closely linked than many people think, and hopefully the audience will gain a better understanding and appreciation of both classical and metal music. The big characteristics they will focus on are energy, tone, and expression. They will talk through the works and highlight these characteristics so the audience can look out for them when they are performed. They will also want to add an element of interactivity between the performance in the audience, where audience members will have the option to manipulate different effects that the string quartet is playing via an interface, making the audience a part of the composition itself.
