This is her first solo exhibition since 2019, and it is not one to miss.As a teenager in the late 1980s, Alvarez was capturing music with a point-and-shoot camera as a music fan. By the early 1990s, she had entered the music industry as a photographer, forging her own path at a time when women of color were rarely represented in the field. Her work goes beyond documenting music history. It reflects the importance of cultural identity, representation behind the camera, and the visibility of women of color in the industry.About Casa de CulturaCasa de Cultura is Violeta Alvarez's Space Taking Artist Residency, a deeply personal project exploring cultural identity, heritage, and memory. Inspired by her mother's journey from Mexico to the United States, the project honors the strength, sacrifices, and ancestral roots of communities native to Mesoamerica. Through personal visual stories and community participation, the residency shapes an archive where reflection, connection, and visibility take root in response to narratives that have tried to erase and diminish presence.Casa de Cultura is a project as part of the Space Taking Artist Residency program, powered by Fresh Arts, running July through August 2026Evening Program:Opening Cultural PerformanceThe evening begins with a special performance by Itzcoatl Tezkatlipoka Aztec Danza, honoring ancestral traditions through movement, rhythm, and ceremony.
