Since 1810
Munich's Oktoberfest dates back to October 1810 and the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The festivities closed with a horse race on 17 October, on the meadow still used today. Locals shortened the meadow's name, Theresienwiese, to die Wiesn, and the festival itself was shifted into September to catch the last of the warm weather.

In Munich it is Festbier: a pale, smooth lager of around 6% brewed for the festival by six Munich breweries. In North America, "Oktoberfest" almost always means Märzen, which is darker, amber and maltier. Same word, two different beers.
