"Music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough for music."--Sergei Rachmaninoff

This program pairs two deeply evocative masterpieces: Antonín Dvořák's Piano Trio in F minor, Op. 65, and Sergei Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 19.

Written during a period of personal and artistic transformation, Dvořák’s F minor Trio blends fiery passion with unmistakable Bohemian lyricism. Its opening movement surges with dramatic urgency, while moments of wistful melody and rhythmic drive reveal a composer balancing sorrow, hope, and national identity. The work’s rich interplay among violin, cello, and piano creates a tapestry of voices that speak with both intimacy and strength.

Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata stands as one of the most soulful works in the chamber repertoire. Composed after his recovery from a crippling depression, the piece radiates warmth, resilience, and lyrical depth. The cello sings with operatic expressiveness while the piano—given an equally prominent role—unfolds sweeping harmonies and nostalgic colors. Together, they craft a narrative of vulnerability transformed into renewed creative passion.

Both works embody the power of music to hold memory, emotion, and healing-offering moments of reflection, connection, and uplift for all who listen.

This Music-in-Medicine concert-integrating real-time neurophysiological data collection and brain-mapping-brings together Takács Quartet's newly appointed cellist (starting Fall 2026) Mihai Marica, celebrated violinist Cho-liang Lin, and acclaimed pianist and Music-in-Medicine Director Dr. Mei Rui.
