It was decorated by wonder goals from Sunday Oliseh, Michael Owen and Dennis Bergkamp, the prolificacy of Gabriel Batistuta, Marcelo Salas, Davor Suker and Christian Vieri, dramatic penalty shootouts and a Croatian fairy tale. The tournament’s script was seemingly written for Brazilian phenomenon Ronaldo, but although he flickered his incomparable genius, it ultimately belonged to a Frenchman who finished the group stage a villain.
