Fake News, Pundits, Politics and Social Media in 2017

Welcome to 2017, join us for a conversation about how social media continues to change the landscape and impact the everyday lives of Americans. No matter which side you were on, the 2016 election proved that not only is social media here to stay, it is also the preferred channel for many Americans to get their political news, especially younger ones. And even though television still reigns supreme as a source for news, reporters get many of their leads and ideas from social media.

Unless you are in politics, you may well wonder what this has to do with you and your business?

Here is the rub. If news that spreads through social media can change the way people think and behave, including the way they elect their leaders, it can also impact what they think about your company, brand, etc.

With the 2016 election in the rearview mirror, we are going to look at how different interests harnessed the election to sway public opinion and make money and how news, both real and fake, may have changed the outcome of a presidential election.

Topics will include:
1. How Macedonian teens, and other fake newsmakers, made a fortune on the US election
2. How political leaders can steal headlines with social media and change policy
3. The inherent dangers of using social media in a reckless manner for leaders
4. How to win hearts and minds by leveraging social media
5. How social media can be used by foreign governments and what we should watch for in the future, both for politics and business
6. The risk of social media activity by political leaders for all kinds of businesses, both domestics and foreign

As the hostess of this event, my (Kami’s) promise is that this will NOT be a political mudslinging talk, but a logical look at how we, as social media managers and power users, can learn from the recent election.
