- **Event Description**: What does living in space do to the human body? Rice evolutionary biologist Dr. Scott Solomon on becoming a new species.About this EventA Conversation on Evolution, Space Settlement, and the Future of HumanityJoin an evolutionary biologist for Becoming Martian: Will Living in Space Change Our Species?, a fascinating exploration of what happens when humanity leaves Earth behind. As plans for permanent settlements on the Moon and Mars move from science fiction to reality, a new question emerges: our bodies and brains evolved over millions of years for life on this planet so how will we adapt when we no longer live here?Drawing on insights from his book Becoming Martian, Dr. Solomon will unpack the science of evolution in space, the surprising ways our DNA may respond to extraterrestrial environments, and what it would mean for humanity to become a species no longer dependent on Earth. Along the way, we’ll tackle some of the biggest questions of our time: How will space settlement reshape human identity? What does it mean to remain human in an entirely new world? And could the first “Martians” represent the next chapter of our evolutionary story? This is not a traditional science lecture. It’s a dynamic, thought-provoking conversation designed for curious minds interested in science, technology, the future, and the human experience. Whether you're captivated by space exploration, fascinated by evolution, or simply wondering what humanity’s future might look like beyond our home planet, you’ll leave with a new perspective on where we’re headed.Don't miss this chance to connect with your After5Society.
