Its seeds are carried by rivers and floodwaters, allowing it to spread quickly downstream.While the plant’s pink flowers might look attractive, the impacts are severe:It outcompetes native plants, taking light, nutrients, and space.It dies back in winter, leaving bare soil that increases riverbank erosion and adds harmful sediment to rivers, damaging fish and invertebrate habitats.It destabilises riverbanks, which can also increase the risk of flooding when it blocks water flow.Join us:This hands-on day will help to rid the area of balsam and help the future surpressing of the plant. Whether you're new to conservation work or have volunteered before, you'll see the direct impact of your efforts. Due to nettles and other hazards this activity is for age 14 years and older, accompanied by an adult.We will also have a general litter pick over Church Meadows and Court Lodge Fields which is accessible to the whole family.Please join us for the whole four hours or for as long as you are able to.What you'll do:Work in teams to pull balsam in and around Church MeadowsLearn about Himalayan Balsam and the impact a non-native invasive species has on our native habitatsConduct a litter pick to help the local wildlife as well as improve the community areas for all to enjoyWhat you'll gain: Practical conservation skills, hands-on experience in invasive species management, and the satisfaction of making a visible difference to your local river. Plus, you'll meet other people passionate about protecting nature. It’s a great way to meet people, get some fresh air, and give back to nature.No experience needed – just bring energy, sturdy boots and clothes you don't mind getting dirty!What you need to know? If you are 14 you must be accompanied by someone over 18 years old. If you're 16 or 17 and coming without a parent/guardian, we'll need written parental consent.
