At Hopkinsville Martial Arts, students don’t “just” test — they earn the opportunity. We conduct a testing event every two months on a Saturday morning. Students must demonstrate that they are ready to test and train for the required time at their current rank.

LD / White-Green Belt - 2 months
Blue to Red Belt - 4 months
Black Belt ranks are based on their degree; 1st Degree= 1 Year, 2nd Degree = 2 years, 3rd Degree= 3 Years, and on.

Students are identified for testing by receiving four progress stripes on their belt. Each stripe represents growth in a specific area. Once a student earns all four stripes a "testing card" is sent home with date/time/price of testing:

⭐ 1st Stripe – Form Knowledge (All Students)
Awarded when a student demonstrates strong understanding and confident performance of all of their forms for their current rank.
⭐ 2nd Stripe – Form Definition & Memory (All Students)
Given when the student can explain their form’s definition, tenants and student oath.
⭐ 3rd Stripe – Attendance or Sparring
(Green Belt and above must earn a sparring stripe.)
White to Yellow Belt: Consistent attendance and active class participation
Green Belt and Above: Active sparring participation, sparring technical development for their rank and consistent attendance.
⭐ 4th Stripe – Instructor Recommendation or Board Breaking Ability
(Blue Belt and above must earn a board breaking stripe.)
White to Yellow Belt: Instructor evaluation and readiness to test
Blue Belt and Above: Board breaking ability and continued power development

? What Happens Next?
Once a student earns all four stripes, they have officially qualified for belt testing. A testing card will be sent home to notify parents of the upcoming testing date. This system ensures that promotions at HMA are based on:
