S-215 Fire Operations in the Wildland-Urban Interface

This course provides the nationally recognized training required to operate safely and effectively during wildland fires that threaten structures, property, and communities. Designed for experienced wildland firefighters, S-215 focuses on decision-making, tactics, and safety considerations unique to the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI).


Course Overview

S-215 Fire Operations in the Wildland-Urban Interface prepares firefighters to respond to incidents where wildland fire impacts developed areas. The course emphasizes size-up, structure protection, operational planning, and firefighter safety in complex interface environments.

Topics include:

  • Wildland-Urban Interface fire environment and hazards
  • Structure triage and protection considerations
  • Pre-incident planning and situational awareness
  • Tactical decision-making in WUI incidents
  • Coordination of wildland and structural firefighting operations
  • Risk management and firefighter safety

This course meets NWCG training standards for WUI operations and builds on foundational wildland firefighting experience.

Prerequisites / Eligibility

Students should meet the following prerequisites prior to attending:

  • Completion of Wildland Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2)
  • At least one year of wildland firefighting experience

This course is not intended for entry-level firefighters and assumes prior operational experience in the wildland fire environment.


What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Identify hazards and risks associated with WUI fire operations
  • Conduct structure triage and prioritize protection strategies
  • Apply appropriate tactics for fires threatening structures
  • Integrate wildland and structural considerations into incident operations
  • Make sound operational decisions while maintaining firefighter safety
