- **Event Description**: Celebrate Mahina ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i, Hawaiian Language Month, with HHS and guest speaker, Puakea Nogelmeier.About this EventThis special Talkstory Saturday will dive into the Ke Kupu Hou, Hawaiian Language Reprint Series and will provide a chance to interact with rare archival material that supported these publications. These reprints are published by the Hawaiian Historical Society to make available books that were printed in ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Most have been long out of print and access to surviving editions is generally limited to libraries and private collections. Join us as Puakea talks about these instrumental publications that were created to support the growing use of the language by students, scholars, and the Hawaiian community as well as all who appreciate its richness.Puakea Nogelmeier is a Professor Emeritus of UH Mānoa where he taught Hawaiian language for 35 years. After decades of study in Hawaiian language, culture, and history, he co-founded Awaiaulu with Nakila Steele in 2003 to foster a new generation of resource people and fortify the use of Hawaiian knowledge. Puakea has been the Executive Director of Awaiaulu since its inception. Puakea is also a Trustee for the Board of the Hawaiian Historical Society.This special TalkStory Saturday will also include light refreshments and continued conversations on the lānai.Talk Story Saturdays encourages our communities to learn, share, and engage with each other about Hawaiian History. Dive deep into the Hawaiian Historical Society’s (HHS) stacks with the staff for a special insiders’ look into the rare and unique books and archival material not normally on public view. The hour-long tour will include: an introduction to the Hawaiian Historical Society, a curated exhibit, a chance to interact with historical material as well as an opportunity to learn how to research and access HHS’ resources. Guests are encouraged to ask questions. Tours are conducted in Hawaiian Historical Society’s Reading Room, Library &amp; Archives.Parking is available on Kawaiaha‘o St or Mission Lane and is street metered parking.
