Moanalua Gardens
2850-a Moanalua Road, Honolulu, United States
Just a few miles from downtown Honolulu, the privately-owned Moanalua Gardens is the setting for a deeply restful guided forest bathing experience. This beautiful 24-acre green space is part of property originally bequeathed by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop to Samuel Mills Damon (1884) and has been maintained by the heirs to his estate for the public's recreation and enjoyment. On the grounds are iconic monkeypod trees (including the Hitachi Tree, designated one of Hawaiʻi's "exceptional trees" and the corporate symbol of Hitachi), native and other tropical plants, as well as several historic buildings.
"Forest Bathing" (translated from "shinrin-yoku," an established public health practice in Japan) is a growing global wellness movement backed by 40 years of scientific research on the physical and psychological benefits of immersing yourself in nature. Tours are conducted in English by Hawaiʻi's first certified forest therapy guide. She has facilitated more than 480 walks.
