Simon began his musical career as a singer, as a chorister with Libera, under the tutelage of Ruth Holton before going on to a choral scholarship and leyclerkship at New College, Oxford under the direction of Edward Higginbottom. Simon spent several years performing with a variety of professional groups, including Charivari Agreable, the Euterpe Baroque Consort, Philharmonia Chorus and Cambridge Singers, before committing to his role as a music teacher. Simon continues to perform as a professional musician, most recently as a pianist for Libera's tour of China in 2017.
Hannah Coates-Jones studied voice under leading Irish Mezzo-Soprano Victoria Massey and has a specialism in classical and musical theatre vocal performance. Hannah spent many years performing in Ireland and has played roles such as Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro, Euridice in Montiverdi's L'Orfeo and Helen of Troy in Offenbach's La belle Hélène. Hannah has performed for the president of Ireland on a number of occasions and was also invited to be one of the lead performers at the Earl and Countess of Rosse's annual mid Summer concert at Birr Castle in 2012. Hannah has worked as a vocal specialist and with choirs throughout her career in music education and choral music performance is one of her passions, particularly enjoying creating new and uplifting arrangements of well-known classics.
The British School in Tokyo Choir
The British School in Tokyo was founded in 1989 and has developed a reputation for its high quality holistic education with more than 1000 students aged 3-18, representing over 65 different nationalities. Music is a highly valued and important part of the curriculum at BST with singing at the core. BST offers numerous singing activities and ensembles across the school giving students access to diverse and varied repertoire.
The BST Secondary Choir comprises of 28 students aged between 12 and 17. The choir is directed by Simon Beston, assisted by Hannah Coates-Jones. The choir has performed repertoire ranging from Faure's Requiem to gospel hits such as 'Oh Happy Day'. The choir has performed in venues across Tokyo and recently performed at the request of the British Ambassador at the Queen's Birthday party at the British Embassy.
This is the choir's first international tour and they are excited to share a wonderful repertoire of British choral music throughout the ages with audiences in Hong Kong.
Alston Ng, Choirmaster
Alston Ng is an active choral conductor and chorister in Hong Kong. He began his conducting career as the Choirmaster of the Hong Kong University Students’ Union Choir in 2006, and enjoys a diversity of performances. In 2008, Alston was invited to be the guest conductor of the Fundraising Concert for the Reconstruction of Sichuan, featuring soprano Yuki Ip and baritone Albert Lim performing Fauré’s Requiem in aid of the victims of the “Great Sichuan Earthquake”.
Alston is the Music Teacher of Bishop Hall Jubilee School, and has led the School Choir as conductor performing both locally and overseas. Under his teaching, the choir has won multiple Gold Awards in the Winter Choral Festival, Gold Award in the Hong Kong International Youth and Children’s Choral Festival, Gold Diploma in the Guangzhou International Open Competition, Silver Award in Orientale Concentus VIII, Best Secondary School Girls’ Choir in the 2nd Division, as well as numerous prizes in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival.
Bishop Hall Jubilee School Choir was founded in 1993, and had taken part in numerous performances since then. In recent years the school choir has won places in the Hong Kong School Music Festival. The Senior Girls’ Choir was awarded Championship in both the Chinese Language and Foreign Language class, together with the Best Girls’ Choir of in Year in Second Division in 2013.
The choirs have also been won numerous awards in different international choral competitions, including Silver Awards and Gold Awards in the Hong Kong International Youth and Children Choir Festivals, Winter Choral Festivals. In 2012 November, the choir has also won a Gold Diploma Level I at GuangZhou International Open Competition, as well as a Silver Award from the Orientale Concentus VIII organized at Singapore in 2015.
The choir was also invited to perform in different occasions, including the Education Day Service of HKSKH, Christmas Carolling at hotel and services at church as well.
The choir has taken part in masterclass by different choral experts including Maria Theresa Roldan, Meng Da Peng and Paul Phoenix.
A number of singers from the Bishop Hall Jubilee School Choir also joined the Hong Kong Festival Voices to perform since 2013, performing under the baton of Vassily Sinaisky, Eric Whitacre etc.
