This year’s series starts Saturday, April 11 with Rethinking Lawns: Understanding the role of lawns, native plants, and the potential for native lawn alternatives. Join us and Lauren Umek, PhD and Senior Project Manager with the Chicago Park District to learn about converting incidental lawns to alternative plantings that can help improve ecosystem function and provide ecosystem services. The Rethinking Lawns team is a partnership between the Chicago Park District, Chicago Botanic Garden, and University of Michigan-Flint. This team of ecologists is exploring the ecosystem services of lawns, natural areas, and native lawn alternatives, plantings that are short and lawn-like in appearance. Dr. Umek will present preliminary results of this research and share feedback received from park visitors, highlight some of her favorite native lawn alternative plants, and give lessons learned in installing, maintaining, and communicating about these unique landscape installations. Green Thumb Saturdays are free to attend and no registration is required! Held from 9:30 to 10:15 am at Homewood Village Hall, this annual series of educational workshops on gardening and environmental topics is held on the second Saturday of every month from April through October. Green Thumb Saturdays are co-sponsored by the Illinois Extension Master Gardeners and the Village of Homewood's Tree Committee.
