During these days of rising prices, disappearing resources, and literal mountains of fiber trash polluting the environment, mending’s become a form of activism and resistance against over-consumption and fast fashion. Have a torn/holey favorite sweater, hoodie, or pair of jeans? Let local fiber artist Melora Bales guide you through a sashiko-inspired, artful mending workshop and spare your favs from the landfill. This slow-stitching garment repair transforms wear-and-tear clothes into one-of-a-kind pieces of wearable art. 

Cost for the workshop is $15 per participant.

Bring a garment needing mending, or use provided fabric to make a patch for later use. A sashiko needle, water-soluble adhesive patch, patch fabric, and sashiko thread will be provided (and are yours to keep). Thimbles will be on-hand for use during the class. The workshop includes a brief introduction to sashiko, samples for example purposes, hands-on instruction during the sewing, aftercare instructions, and lots of time for additional questions. Extra thread, patches, and thimbles will be available for purchase for future projects.

Great for beginners, as well as people who already know how to sew sashiko-style mending uses the basic running stitch to create various geometric and circular patterns from easy to intricate, accessible and enjoyable for all skill levels.
