Detroit-based trumpeter, composer, and educator Kris Johnson is widely recognized for his warm tone, lyrical phrasing, and dynamic artistry. As a performer and arranger, he has worked with a wide range of acclaimed artists and ensembles, bringing a distinctive voice to contemporary jazz. His musical leadership and creative vision have made him one of the most respected trumpet artists of his generation.

Under the direction of Prof. Robert Shipley, the Jazz Arts Collective—Hope College’s premier large jazz ensemble—brings a dynamic and creative focus to ensemble communication and improvisation. With a flexible wind section and rhythm-driven energy, this elite group delivers compelling performances that span the full spectrum of jazz, including music that reflects the theme of romance through expressive ballads and contemporary works.

Joining them are the Jazz Guitar Combo, directed by Prof. Lee Heerspink, and the Steps Ahead Jazz Combo, directed by Prof. Tom Lockwood. These outstanding jazz chamber ensembles specialize in both classic and modern styles, highlighting the artistry and versatility of Hope College’s student musicians. Audiences can expect an evening filled with lyrical melodies, engaging interplay, and heartfelt musical expression.

About the Director

Robert Shipley is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at Hope College. A Grammy-nominated drummer, he has performed at renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, The Tonight Show, and Oprah Winfrey’s stage. His career includes performances with legendary artists such as Diana Ross, Natalie Cole, The Temptations, The O’Jays, and Chaka Khan. At Hope College, he is dedicated to mentoring and inspiring the next generation of jazz musicians.
