Eastern indigo snakes used to roam widely across North Florida but by the mid-1980s they were essentially gone from the landscape, in part due to habitat loss and fragmentation, and were designated as a federally threatened species. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) recognized an opportunity to join in the effort to bring the snake back to its historic range and bring balance to the ecosystem. Decades of work culminated in releasing the first group of 2-year-old indigo snakes in 2017. Additional snakes are released each year as TNC and partners work to establish a self-sustaining population. Join this lecture to learn more about the eastern indigo breeding program and how you can support major milestones!Speaker: Cathy RickettsThe Nature Conservancy's Center for Conservation InitiativesApalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve ManagerRegistration closes at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10.Please contact us with any questions, concerns, or requests.Phone: 561-744-6668Email: VisitBRP@tnc.org--------------Be sure to check out the to register for more lecture topics scheduled for 1/28, 2/11, 2/25, and 3/25. "description": "The Nature Conservancy\n (TNC) is a global environmental nonprofit working to create a world where people and nature can thrive.\nFounded in the U.S. through grassroots action in 1951, TNC has grown to become one of the most effective and wide-reaching environmental organizations in the world. Thanks to more than a million members and the dedicated efforts of our diverse staff and over 400 scientists, we impact conservation in 79 countries and territories: 37 by direct conservation impact and 42 through partners.\nAfter six decades of protecting Florida’s great places, TNC considers \nBlowing Rocks Preserve\n one of our proudest achievements. This peaceful, barrier island sanctuary is a well-known model for large-scale, native coastal habitat restoration. The natural features found here are disappearing fast from many Florida islands, and a number of endangered plants and animals call this special place home—including rare loggerhead, green and leatherback sea turtles.\nThe preserve was named for its rocky Anastasia limestone shoreline—the largest on the Atlantic coast. At high tide when the sea is rough, seas break against the rocks and force plumes of saltwater up to 50 feet skyward. It’s an impressive sight.\nBlowing Rocks Preserve is one of four campus preserves under TNC Florida’s Center for Conservation Initiatives, advancing conservation through education and training, outreach and volunteerism, science and research, and land stewardship.
