About the event

Symphony for the Creatures of the Estuary

From your vantage point at Bellerive Marina, you'll witness four pioneering sound artists (including the boat itself) transform bespoke mechanical water instruments, field recordings, synthesised frequencies, and live improvisation into an immersive soundscape in tribute to all the members of this ecosystem, both large and small, including you.

THE ARTISTS

Richie Cyngler is a multidisciplinary artist working in Lutruwita. His primary creative interests are in perception, consciousness and lived experience through audience participation. Richie makes vibrant interactive public art and performances, often combining programming and synthesizers. He enjoys engaging audiences with unique works, intended to challenge, delight, amuse, and contemplate.

Julia Drouhin (she/her, VK7HAG) amplifies sound streams that reveal friction in sociality via radioscape, installation or collaborative performance. Julia completed her Ph.D about the art of walking and broadcast impact in public space in Paris 8 France in 2011 before living in Lutruwita/Tasmania, where she currently works with artists living with disabilities and youth in local communities. She is represented by Penny Contemporary gallery.

Dylan Sheridan is a multi-disciplinary Tasmanian artist and composer forging distinctive new territory in experimental music and performance. His work represents an intricate convergence of sound, kinetic objects, performance and adaptive technologies – a composition of elements that often exists on the boundaries of visual, sound and performed art.

THE BOAT

"Sea Hag" - This historic vessel serves as both platform and performer, its hull and mechanics becoming an instrument resonating with the waters of the estuary. The boat's natural frequencies, engine, creaks, and responses to the water contribute a rich sonic library to the performance. Facelifted by Tom O’Hern.

Captain Dan Tucker navigates the "Sea Hag" with precision, his intimate knowledge of the estuary's currents and underwater topography turning the vessel's journey into a choreographed element of the performance. His decades of maritime experience a foundation upon which this project is built.

This work was made possible with a grant from Clarence City Council as part of the Cultural and Creative grants stream.
