About the event

'Others' - US & Them. Part A of a Two Part Theatre of the Oppressed Workshop for the Greater Hobart Community
What this is: This is a community workshop, focusing on applying theatre practices to our lived experiences of othering, how it affects ourselves and those around us. There are two parts to the workshop. Part A and Part B.

Part A is focused on using TO to explore the themes. Dates are 21st-22nd of Nov. Part B focuses on applying what was learnt and developing a Forum play. This play may or may not be performed; the group gets to choose, and if one person says no, we go with that, as safety is a priority in our small communities. Dates: 24th-26th of Nov. You can attend Part A and not Part B, but you can not attend Part B without attending Part A. :-) People seeking to be involved with play creation must fully attend both workshops. There will be an honorarium provided for any individuals completing both workshops, though places are limited, so please make sure you send an expression of interest.

Why is this workshop important? We all carry stories of belonging and exclusion. In this workshop, we'll look at both sides: moments when we've been seen as "the other," reduced to a label or assumption; andmoments when we've seen or treated others through those same filters. Together, we'll create with our real experiences of othering and use theatre to open collective dialogue: How does othering play out between us? What keeps it alive? What might change if we acted differently?

What actually happens: We use theatre games and movement - not to perform, but as ways to explore and connect with people with disabilities, Aboriginal people, LGBTQIA+ people, people from different class backgrounds, and all people who experience othering - and people we other, including those we justify as being the problem. Everything adapts to how your body works. Mostly, we're creating space to be with what's really happening - personally and collectively - while honouring our connection to the more-than-human world to sustain us in this work.If you're hesitant: That makes complete sense. You don't need to know anything about theatre. You will never be pushed into something you do not want to do.

The uncertainty you might be feeling about whether this is "for you" is actually part of what we explore together. The people who come usually find others who are also willing to sit with the big questions of our time - and there's something deeply relieving about not being alone with all of this. Take care of yourself: We have a support person available as a referral point during the process, not because we think people are made of glass, but because we're clear we're inviting you into a robust conversation.

Facilitators: Hector Aristizábal (Re-Conectando Colombia) & Xris Reardon (Third Way Theatre, Hobart & Vic)
