While his co-conspirators enjoy a government amnesty, Sam Willard is in prison, paying the price for exposing war crimes. Surrounded by enemies eager for revenge, his greatest challenge is survival.

But then a mysterious federal agent offers him a dangerous proposition: his freedom in exchange for infiltrating an extremist group to rescue the son of a radical politician. With an old adversary lurking in the shadows, Sam must navigate a web of deception and danger.

Meanwhile, Detective Sergeant Jill Wilkie is on the case of a series of racially motivated attacks and as tensions escalate, so does the danger. As Hobart becomes a battleground for competing ideologies one slip will expose Sam – and ignite the very attack Jill Wilkie must stop.

Will Tasmania become the last bastion for far-right extremists?

This most recent Sam Willard and Jill Wilkie crime novel explores the harsh realities of loyalty, betrayal and the fight against extremism.

Alan Carter was born in Sunderland, UK. He immigrated to Australia in 1991 and now lives in splendid semi-rural, semi-isolation south of Hobart, Tasmania. In his spare time, he follows the black line up and down the local swimming pool, or drags on his wetsuit and braves the icy waters of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. Alan is the author of Prize Catch, which is set in Tasmania, and three novels in the Nick Chester series: Marlborough Man (winner of the Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Crime Novel), Doom Creek and Franz Josef. He is also the author of the Fremantle-set DS Cato Kwong series, which includes Prime Cut (winner of the Ned Kelly Award for Best First Fiction), Getting Warmer, Bad Seed, Heaven Sent and Crocodile Tears.

Over thirteen years ago, Jo Dixon moved from suburban Brisbane to rural Tasmania, where she now writes full-time. She has released three bestselling suspense novels, and has been shortlisted for the Ned Kelly awards, the Danger awards, and the Davitt awards. Her fourth book is currently being transformed from a pile of scribbled notes to words on the screen.
