About the Project

This event is the final in our series partnering with IMAS researchers to improve habitat for the Tasmanian live‑bearing sea star. Together, we’re working to remove invasive porcelain crabs from Susans Bay in Primrose Sands and give this Critically Endangered species the best chance to recover.

Why This Matters

Growing to the size of your thumbnail, these tiny hermaphroditic sea stars have both male and female gonads and give birth to live young, one of only six sea star species in the world to do so. Porcelain crabs compete for space and block the sea stars’ access to feeding areas, contributing to population declines and increasing the risk of extinction.

Recent Progress

In January, local volunteers and the IMAS team removed 6,000 crabs, and the work continues on Sat 25 April from 8.30am, join us and be part of this important work.

What to Expect

This is hands‑on conservation work involving crouching, kneeling, and walking on uneven rocky shorelines.

No Experience Needed

No experience or equipment is required, training and guidance will be provided on the day. Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to join us. Please note that children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

What to Wear

Please wear appropriate layers, dress for changing coastal conditions, and choose comfortable, sturdy shoes.
