Nguyễn Art Foundation (NAF) warmly invites you to the opening reception of ‘Mạch Ngầm’ [‘counter-place’], a group exhibition featuring artists: Vo An Khanh, An-My Le, Truong Cong Tung, Ngoc Nau, Nguyen Trinh Thi, Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Tuan Mami, Nguyen Thai Tuan and Phan Anh. 

Curated by Vicky Do, the exhibition develops from an ongoing thesis conceived in the form of an Atlas. Taking the landscapes that underlie the artworks at its point of departure, the thesis draws upon concepts from geography and geology to reconsider history and human’s place within the environments that have witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations. Centering landscape not as a passive backdrop, this exhibition-as-a-thesis proposes an archaeological investigation into the ‘counter-places’ that exist alongside and beneath officially recognized places, examining and analyzing them through the conceptual propositions embedded within the exhibited artworks and their installations. Contemporary art is a byproduct of the social and political conditions from which it emerges and, whether intentionally or not, invariably carries within it the discourses of its time. If territories are drawn by political institutions, then the map of ‘counter-places’ rejects such definitions and impositions through texts – a medium capable of giving form to intangible abstractions. This Atlas can be seen as a form of fictional writing, drawn from the gaps between artworks, attempting to chase the unseen through the imaginative possibilities that fiction gifts us with.  

‘Mạch Ngầm’ [‘counter-place’] is the first thesis presented as part of ‘Within & Beyond: a Taxonomy in Exhibition-making’ – a year-long educational and curatorial initiative launched by Vicky Do. Exploring the different phases and methodologies of meaning-making through exhibitions, ‘Within & Beyond: A Taxonomy in Exhibition-making’ approaches these questions via the notion of the ‘Survey of Landscape’ – the central framework for this year’s edition. Traditionally associated with scientific classification – the mapping of lands, environments, settlements, and ecological formations – taxonomy here is expanded toward and through cultural, political, emotional, and speculative perspectives. No longer merely a physical site, landscape becomes a structure through which ideologies, histories, economies, spiritualities, and human relationships unfold. To survey a landscape, therefore, is also to examine the systems and people that shape visibility, belonging, displacement, and imagination.

Nguyễn Art Foundation (NAF) thân mời quý khán giả tham dự khai mạc triển lãm ‘Mạch Ngầm’ [‘counter-place’], một triển lãm nhóm với sự tham gia của các nghệ sĩ: Võ An Khánh, An-My Lê, Trương Công Tùng, Ngọc Nâu, Nguyễn Trinh Thi, Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai, Tuấn Mami, Nguyễn Thái Tuấn và Phan Anh. 

Được giám tuyển bởi Vicky Đỗ, triển lãm là sự phát triển của một luận đề, trong hình dạng của một cuốn Atlas. Lấy cảnh quan trong các tác phẩm nghệ thuật làm trung tâm, luận đề mượn các khái niệm về địa lý và địa chất để đề xuất các cách nhìn về lịch sử, về vị trí của con người như một phần cấu thành của cảnh quan trong quá trình tạo tác và suy tàn của các nền văn minh. Luận đề có hình thức của một khảo cổ học những ‘counter-place’ của những nơi chốn có thật, khảo sát và phân tích chúng dựa trên gợi ý từ những tác phẩm thị giác và sắp đặt. Nghệ thuật đương đại là một phụ phẩm của các phong trào xã hội và vì vậy, dù muốn hay không, nó luôn mang trong mình những diễn ngôn của thời đại. Lãnh thổ được vẽ ra bởi các thiết chế chính trị trong khi bản đồ của những ‘counter-place’ chối từ các định nghĩa và sự áp đặt bằng chất liệu ngôn từ, một chất liệu có khả năng diễn giải những trừu tượng vô hình. ‘Mạch Ngầm’ [‘counter-place’], cuốn Atlas này, có thể được xem như một văn bản hư cấu; được vẽ ra bởi các khoảng trống giữa các tác phẩm thị giác, những điều không thấy được gợi ý bằng các tưởng tượng, một đặc quyền của hư cấu.

Triển lãm ‘Mạch Ngầm’ [‘counter-place’] là luận đề đầu tiên trong khuôn khổ dự án ‘Nội hiện & Ngoại biên: Tạo tác Triển lãm’ – một sáng kiến giáo dục và giám tuyển kéo dài một năm được khởi xướng bởi Vicky Đỗ. Nhằm khám phá các giai đoạn và phương pháp khác nhau của quá trình tạo nghĩa thông qua thực hành triển lãm, dự án ‘Nội hiện & Ngoại biên: Tạo tác Triển lãm’ tiếp cận những câu hỏi này thông qua ‘Phân loại học cảnh quan’ – chủ đề trọng tâm của chương trình năm nay. Vốn thường gắn liền với phương pháp phân loại mang tính khoa học – thiết lập bản đồ vùng đất, môi trường, khu vực cư trú, và các hệ tầng sinh thái – khái niệm “phân loại học” ở đây mở rộng biên độ sang và xuyên qua các chiều kích văn hóa, chính trị, cảm xúc và tư duy suy tưởng. Không đơn thuần là một vùng đất vật lý, cảnh quan giờ đây trở thành một cấu trúc để từ đó các hệ tư tưởng, lịch sử, kinh tế, tinh thần, các mối quan hệ giữa người với người được diễn trình. Theo đó, khảo sát một cảnh quan cũng chính là xem xét và phân loại các hệ thống và những chủ thể định hình nên sự hữu hình của một vùng đất – và theo đó là cảm thức thuộc về, hiện tượng di dời, và trí tưởng tượng tập thể.
