About the event

Transforming Monsters: How the literature of terror still speaks to us today- evening talk
In 1974, Angela Carter, the ‘high sorceress’ of English literature, declared: “We live in gothic times”.

Each decade since, Gothic academics and social commentators alike have continued to find validity in this statement. But what is contemporary Gothic?

By looking at key texts. Changing definitions and transforming monsters, this talk will explore why we still need spaces to indulge our darkest fears. It will consider how, over 300 years since its inception, the Gothic continues to provide a mode through which we can consider ongoing social and cultural anxieties, and how the past continues to haunt the present.
