June 27th 2026 - save the date for a Hinton Search and Rescue Fundraiser (hike/bike/run) in Cadomin.
From child birth to adulthood, mining deaths to sawmill accidents, to Coal Branch soldiers dying overseas during the World Wars, many Coal Branchers made the ultimate sacrifice ever since the Coal Branch was created. On just two days alone, June 17th 1950 and August 5th 1942, Cadomin witnessed the tragic deaths of ten miners cumulatively.
Goal: to honor these sacrifices by supporting an organization whose members go above and beyond to save lives and bring home loved ones, all around Alberta and even Western Canada.
Where: Cadomin has two cemeteries, one just up the western slope in front of the new hall, and the other up the western hillside above the mine entrance south of the hamlet. There’s a beautiful forest path available to connect the two, with an option to then join up to the river trail that borders Cadomin on the east.
I’m going to flag a looped trail to connect with these cemeteries and the river trail, with an approximate distance of around 7-9km for one loop (TBD once I’ve done the final measurement).
Plan: you can start anytime after 7am on June 27th, and do as many - or as few - loops as you wish. All I ask is that you pledge a dollar amount to donate to HSAR for each loop that you complete.
Run, hike, walk, mountain bike… go as fast or as slow as you wish, for as long as you wish. Go for a couple of hours or go for the full twelve and make it a self-supported ultra. It’s up to you. Just sign out (and text me) when you’re done, and how many loops you completed. I’ll figure out with HSAR the best way to send in yor pledges.
Start time for the first loop is 7am and the fundraiser will be done by 7pm.
I’ll be there to offer at least a few guided loops (starting with the first one) but the trail will be well marked and I’ll also provide a map.
Everyone is welcome but the ground will be uneven at times and there will be some short hills to climb.
Admission: no cost but I do ask that you commit to the pledge per loop to benefit HSAR.
Staging area will be the kids playground in Cadomin and I’ll lead the first hike off at 7am.
Interested folks can message me through this page.
Note that this is an informal event, honor-system will be in play and you’re accepting of any risk that might come from walking in the woods.
** I’ll get some merch for participants to wear on the day of, and help create awareness of the cause
