The following topis will be covered during an online tutorial and field visit:identification and ecology of badgerslegislation protecting themsurvey standards and techniquesmitigation measures and licensinghabitat managementThis training day will be split into two sessions, an online tutorial which will cover the subjects above, as well as practical tips on habitat assessment, levels of disturbance badgers will tolerate, and the need for good surveys. The second session will be a session in the field, where a number of badger setts are located. This main part of the training will focus on the practical elements of badger conservation – it will provide plenty of opportunities to search for and identify badger signs, and familiarise attendees with effective mitigation tools and habitat management.At the end of the course, attendees will be issued with an attendance certificate.Tutors: Holly Stanworth & Dave WilliamsAbout the tutors:Holly will be running the online tutorial. With 11 years experience in ecological consultancy, she has first hand experience of completing badger surveys, designing and implementing appropriate mitigation, and managing habitats for this species. She is now a Conservation Officer at The Species Recovery Trust, works as a freelance ecologist, and is very passionate about conserving our rarest and most protected species.Dave will be running the practical session. Dave has worked to save badgers and protect their spaces for decades, both on the ground and through his involvement with local badger groups and Badger Trust, he was the chairman for 10 years. He is a founder member of West Surrey Badger Group, and was the Mammal Project Officer at Surrey Wildlife Trust for 10 years. His dedication to this species has earnt him the prestigious, national John Taylor award, which recognises his outstanding services to badgers.What to bringPlease make sure you're wearing sturdy walking shoes & all-weather gear as we will be outdoors for the entire session, and walking across hilly terrain.The field session will be approximately 3 hours, so please also bring water & snacks.Please inform us of any relevant medical requirements/conditions we should be aware of prior to the course.There are no toilets on site, so please use nearby facilities before you arrive.ScheduleOnline tutorial – this will be available from Tues 20th April at 9am, and should be watched ahead of the field session on the 21st (it will remain available until 9am on the 21st).Tuesday 21st April - 3 hour field session in Surrey - the group will split with half attendees joining a 10am - 1pm morning field session and the remainder to a 2pm - 5pm afternoon field session (you will be given the opportunity to say which you would prefer during ticket purchase, and whilst we will do our best to accommodate everyone's preference, this cannot be guaranteed).It is possible the location of the field session may need to be changed closer to the time, should there be a lack of badger activity, in the event of this happening we would be in touch with you, and the new site would be fairly close by.If there are very strong storms, we will need to reschedule as the sites are within woodland - prior warning will be provided if this is the case.DirectionsMeeting point address: Boundless Road, Godalming, GU8 5LF (tricky to find unless you know the area). If you plug the postcode into google maps, it gives you a large area, so please look for the small car park at the northern end of Punch Bowl Lane, where it meets Boundless Road (see map).
