The Town of Hilton Head Island invites the community to celebrate the groundbreaking of the future Taylor Family Park.
The ceremony will take place as follows:
• Date: Monday, Dec. 8, 2025
• Time: 10 a.m.
• Location: 252 Wild Horse Road
• Parking: Please park at the Boys and Girls Club on Gumtree Road and ride the Palmetto Breeze Trolley to the Park site. The trolley will be available starting at 9 a.m.
The groundbreaking ceremony officially launches the construction of this family-oriented park that celebrates the area’s Gullah Geechee history and culture. “The Taylor Family park represents the Town’s commitment to creating a wonderful space that honors and reflects our Island’s rich heritage while providing a place for people to gather and learn,” said Mayor Alan Perry.
Located in the historic Squire Pope neighborhood, the new 4.9-acre park will feature a pavilion, picnic area, a walking trail with interpretive elements that highlight local history, and a playground featuring a custom-built boat inspired by Gullah traditions. The land has deep ties to the Gullah community. It was once home to the McKnight family, a longstanding Gullah family, and later became the property of the Taylor family. Ultimately, the Taylors donated it to the Town with the vision of it becoming a place for neighbors to gather. The park’s design pays tribute to the area’s maritime heritage, reflecting its generations of fishing and shrimping, as well as the community’s connection to the nearby coastal waterway.

We collaborated with residents and stakeholders, who guided the design and feel of this park with their memories, knowledge, and desires. Our team of project managers, landscape architects, planners, and others captured those ideas to create a vibrant, welcoming space for residents and future generations,” said Town Manager Marc Orlando.
The Taylor Family Park project aligns with the Town’s strategic goal of enhancing community well-being and promoting health, connectivity, environmental sustainability, and a high quality of life for residents and visitors through its network of parks and recreational amenities.
