Lead like a teacher.About this EventEFTS is 3-day course designed for teachers who want to see their students questioning, measuring, and making sense of the world around them, who know that every schoolyard, soccer field, and sidewalk crack has the potential to be an outdoor classroom, and who believe that the best way find a connection to nature is through curiousity—but only if you pursue it.In other words, EFTS is a field ecology intensive for teachers seeking to cultivate authentic community science programs in their classrooms and schools.Over three days at Duke Farms, participants will gain hands-on experience with the tools and methods that ecologists use to measure:soil health and carbon storage;successional dynamics in meadows;plant, invertebrate, and bird biodiversity;habitat structure and functional diversity in forests;climate-driven phenological trends.We'll discuss how to set up field studies that produce both rigorous datasets and lasting student outcomes at the same time, and we'll take a look at the analytic and visualization tools that can help students turn those data into real understanding.Each participant will leave equipped to confidently facilitate field experiences in their own school settings and establish or expand community science projects that empower students not only to think like scientists, but to act like them too.Your InstructorsEFTS gives teachers the opportunity to learn directly from Duke Farms' conservation scientists. Most participants teach middle or high schoolers, but enthusiastic teachers of younger students are certainly welcome and provide a unique perspective on community science in schools.No prior experience in field ecology is required or expected, though most participants will find a basic understanding of the life sciences to be helpful.Field sessions will take place fully outdoors and may require travelling about a mile or standing on mixed surfaces and uneven terrain (paved roads, dirt trails, off trail) for up to 2 hours in summer weather.
