Adding to the excitement, Highlands will host approximately 60 sailors from Italy’s famed training vessel, the Amerigo Vespucci, during a private hospitality and cultural exchange on July 3. Often referred to as one of the most beautiful ships in the world, the Amerigo Vespucci serves as a training ship for the Italian Navy and is recognized internationally as a symbol of maritime tradition and goodwill.

As part of the private visit, the visiting sailors will receive an official Highlands welcome from Mayor Carolyn Broullon, members of the Borough Council, the Highlands Business Partnership, the VFW Post 6902 Color Guard, the Solas Na Mara Pipe Band, the Henry Hudson Regional School Marching Band, Sandy Hook Bay Marina, One Willow, The Sandbox at Seastreak, Inlet Café, Bahrs Landing, and other community partners participating in the evening’s festivities. Throughout the evening, the sailors will enjoy welcoming ceremonies, hospitality events, cultural exchanges, and visits to several Highlands waterfront venues that showcase the community’s rich maritime heritage and hospitality. As part of the official welcome, Mayor Broullon will present a proclamation commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and recognizing the Amerigo Vespucci and its crew for their participation in Sail4th 250. During a special ceremony, members of VFW Post 6902 will honor the visiting sailors by presenting them with commemorative challenge coins as a symbol of friendship and appreciation.

The Sail4th 250 celebration commemorates America’s 250th birthday and will feature a six-day series of maritime, cultural, educational, and patriotic events throughout the New York and New Jersey region. Organizers anticipate millions of spectators and visitors from around the world.
