Basket Willow Weaving Workshop | Event in Hickling Pastures | Basket Willow Weaving Workshop
Willow weave a small basket at this one-day workshop at Hanwell Wine Estate. All materials included plus lunch with wine, the perfect day.

About this Event

This is your chance to make your very own wonderful willow weaved basket. Our one-day workshop will give you the opportunity to discover the pleasures of working with willow and create a stunning functional basket, perfect as a centerpiece on your kitchen table, to hold fruit, bits and bobs or maybe dried flowers.

Enjoy a unique and satisfying experience learning to work with locally sourced willow in the beautiful surroundings of Hanwell Wine Estate. Jean, your tutor, will take you through a journey teaching you the basics of making a basket from English willow. She will share with you her years of experience and knowledge of tools and materials to use. Jeans’ exceptional experience will guide you through, so by the end of the day, you will have learnt different weaving techniques and make a lovely useful basket.

This workshop is suitable for both complete novices and people with experience of using willow. All materials and tools are provided along with refreshments throughout the day and a two-course handmade lunch served with a glass of wine.

By the end of the day, you will have made one round basket to take home with you.

Your tutor Jean

A farmer’s daughter with a true passion for the countryside and keeping rural crafts alive, I have been teaching creative basketry for almost twenty years. I have a deep-seated love of the land and can often be found foraging around local hedgerows for natural materials to use in my work. I gather earthy, sustainable materials such as willow, dogwood, bark, foliage and fleece which I use to create beautiful, functional baskets and structures with irresistible smells and tactile appeal. I also grow and harvest willow, reeds, herbs and wild plants in my own little plot of earth – The Brikkle Wood, Hallaton.

Since completing a City and Guilds in Creative Basketry at the City Lit, London in 2003 I have continued to improve my techniques by attending courses with world-renowned basket makers for example, Joe Hogan, Sheila Wynter, Francois Desplanches, Mary Butcher and Owen Jones.

My classes are lively, fun and a lovely way to learn new craft, they attract a broad mix of students from children to adults and people with disabilities, including learning disabilities.

To ensure the quality of your personal experience, group size will be limited to 6.

Here at Hanwell Wine Estate, we love hosting Rural Antics workshops! They enable us to open up the wonderful countryside setting of our vineyard to you, giving us all the opportunity to get closer to nature. Hand-making great wine is a real craft and Rural Antics provides a space for us to involve interested people in our wine-making, alongside other artisan past times, such as chair weaving, foraging and painting.
