HIAWATHA, KS — A panel discussion of the upcoming August 4 ballot question whether to change how Kansas Supreme Court justices are selected will be presented Tuesday, July 14, at 6:30 p.m. in the large meeting room of the Morrill Public Library, 431 Oregon St, Hiawatha, Kansas.
 
The presentation, titled “High Court/High Stakes,” is free. You will learn from legal experts familiar both with the process and with the proposed amendment. Everyone is encouraged to bring questions for the panelists.
 
All registered Kansans can vote on this ballot question, even if not affiliated with any political party. If you are not already registered, you must do so before the deadline at the end of the July 14 business day, which is before this forum event begins. You may check your registration anytime at https://myvoteinfo.voteks.org/voterview/ and see your sample ballot, or if necessary, click “Not yet registered?” to register online.
 
The panelists will review the “triple play of 1956” controversy that led to Kansas adopting its merit selection process for new Supreme Court justices. You will learn how our current system works, how the proposed amendment to the Constitution would change the system, and its possible long-term effects. The purpose is to educate citizens about this important vote before the primary election.
 
One of the panelists, Natalie Haag, is a past President of the Kansas Bar Association and served eight years on the Kansas Supreme Court Nominating Commission. She previously was General Counsel, Director of Governmental Affairs, and Chief of Staff to former Kansas Governor Bill Graves, and spent a decade in criminal prosecution and civil litigation. Haag is now Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Capitol Federal Savings Bank.
 
Other panelists are Kevin Hill, an attorney in Hiawatha, and Clay Wirestone, opinions editor for the Kansas Reflector news service. Sherman Smith, editor in Chief of the Kansas Reflector, will moderate the discussion.
 
After the presentation the panelists will take questions from the audience.
