Learn to Play Day
It’s National Learn to Play Day on Sunday 24 March and we’ll be here from 10 am to 3 pm, offering free taster lessons and music sessions across a huge variety of instruments and styles. Free, 15-minute one-to-one taster lessons are available on:
Piano: 10.00 – 11.00 am
Piano accordion: 11.00 am – 12.00 pm
Mandolin: 11.00 am – 12.00 pm
Banjo, guitar, bass: 1.30 – 3.00 pm
Drums: 11.00 am – 1.00 pm
Guitar: 11.00 am – 12.15 pm
Lute: 12.15 – 1.00 pm
Voice, recorder, Celtic harp: 1.00 – 3.00 pm
Ukulele: 1.00 – 2.00 pm
Saxophone: 2.00 – 3.00 pm
Family Story and Music Making: 10.00 – 11.30 am
Helen Walker will challenge you and your family to create a fun mini-musical in 15 minutes. Learn how to quickly create a musical story about aspiration, resilience, optimism and change.
No music or story telling skills necessary.
Folk session: 12.00 – 1.00 pm
A slow, steady session for newcomers to group playing on folk instruments.
Bluegrass session: 12.00 – 1.00 pm
If you're not sure what bluegrass and old time music sounds like, and would like to give it try, the bluegrass session will be a straightforward and slow session playing along with some from Hexham Bluegrass. Suitable for anyone that fancies playing a few chords, singing a little, or maybe try a solo instrumental. Any acoustic instrument welcome.
Improvisation session: 2.00 – 3.00 pm
A session on playing back beat rhythms such as swing and reggae, with a little bit of background as to where these rhythms may have originated and how they have evolved. Open to all instrumentalists and singers – no prior musical knowledge required!
