Experience the trail from a new perspective in this immersive mobile session led by Nancy Stevens, a blind hiker and guide dog handler. Participants will hike a short, accessible trail while wearing blindfolds, guided by partners and coached by Nancy using techniques she has developed over years of outdoor exploration with her Seeing Eye dogs. Nancy will demonstrate how she and Winnie navigate terrain—using verbal cues, trekking poles, and trust. Participants will explore how shifting one’s perspective can lead to deeper empathy, practical insights, and a better understanding of accessibility needs on trails. This experiential session highlights the physical and emotional dimensions of hiking with vision loss, offering public land professionals and outdoor educators hands-on experience in inclusive trail practices.
This mostly flat mixed terrain 1 mile loop through Hat Rock State Park will be an exploratory walk led at a slow pace with stops along the way to switch out roles between participants. You are encouraged to bring your own handkerchiefs or blind folds for the exercise as well as sturdy shoes, water, sunscreen, and a walking stick if you like.
Please note: There are 5 parking lots for Hat Rock State Park. This trail starts from the first parking lot on the right after turning right at the monument sign, about 0.7 miles down Hat Rock Road from the turn on Highway 730.
