Peter Dyke has held the post of Assistant Organist and then Assistant Director of Music at Hereford Cathedral for the last 28 years, accompanying up to eight choral services each week as well as regularly playing for the cathedral choir on overseas tours and on frequent radio and television broadcasts.
He is responsible for the cathedral’s popular organ recital series, and has acted as Festival Organist at the last nine Hereford Three Choirs Festivals. Earlier this year he covered a second interregnum period, before the cathedral’s new director of music, Andrew Reid, took up his post in April.
In 2000, he founded (and still directs) the Hereford Cathedral’s Voluntary Choir, which has made six of its own tours to Germany, and which actively supports contemporary composers of sacred music. The choir’s innovatory Composition Competitions at the 2015, 2022 and 2025 Three Choirs Festivals resulted in entries from all over the world with the choir premiering the winning works by George Arthur, Olivia Sparkhall and Judith Ward. Since 2008 he has been the mentor for eighteen cathedral organ scholars, many of whom
now work in cathedral music across the UK and around the world.
Peter was awarded second prize in the prestigious Interpretation Competition at the St Albans International Organ Festival in 1993. His most recent solo CD, including his own transcription of Elgar’s Enigma Variations, quickly received favourable reviews at home and
internationally. More recent events have included solo recitals all over the UK, in Germany and France, and children’s workshops in Hereford, Leominster and Ludlow incorporating his own transcription of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf.
During the Covid pandemic when attendance at live choral services were not possible, Peter’s online recitals and “Virtual Voluntaries” were much appreciated by audiences; these remain available to view. In 2022 he performed the 24 preludes and fuges of Book II of Bach's Well-tempered Clavier in a series of piano recitals.
