Tournament of Champions (TOC) is our annual tournament and is for all students! Four-year old white belts to the most experienced black belts will compete in Master Kim’s largest annual event! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What events can I participate in?
A: There are six events. The three Traditional Events are Forms, Sparring and Board Breaking. The three Exhibition Events are Jumping High Kick, Speed Kicking, and Nunchuks. Everyone may participate in Board Breaking, Jumping High Kick, Speed Kicking, and Nunchuks. All students with safety equipment may compete in Sparring, including white belts. Yellow belts and higher may participate in Forms.
Q: I just started taekwondo, can I participate?
A: Yes! You will be in divisions with others of similar rank and ability. Tournament of Champions is once a year. Gain competition experience at the beginner ranks, don’t miss it!
Q: When should I show up for the tournament?
A: We recommend you show up at least an hour prior to your first event. Find your ring labeled by Belt Color and wait to be checked in. Don’t miss the Spectacular Exhibition at 1:00pm by the Demo Team.
Q: Who needs a ticket? When can I get them?
A: Competitors do not need a ticket. All spectators will need a ticket. Purchase your tickets when you register, and pick them up at your next class. They are $7 in advance and $12 at the door. Free for children 3 years of age and under. *Cash and checks will be accepted for payment at the venue for admissions and food.*
TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS: THINGS TO KNOW
1. WHO: The event is open to all students of Master Kim’s Taekwondo Institute in Penfield, Greece, and Irondequoit. We also invite MKTKD’s affiliated schools from New York State. We anticipate 500 competitors. TOC is only once a year and is for everyone!
2. WHY: This is your chance to test your skills in a fun, competitive environment. Through competition students learn sportsmanship, cooperation and respect while having fun through participation. All students build confidence from competing and earning awards!
3. ELIGIBILITY: All students may compete in Board Breaking, Sparring, Speed Kicking, Nunchuks, and Jumping High Kick. Students must be yellow belt and above to compete in Forms. SATURDAY NOVEMBER 29th is the last day to register. All divisions will be separated by age, belt, weight, and ability, as the tournament committee deems necessary for fair competition. Early registration is appreciated.
4. REGISTRATION: The registration link is on the last page of this packet, on the MKTKD App, and was emailed to everyone. The registration deadline is SATURDAY NOVEMBER 29th. Thank you for registering early. Sparring competitors must have height and weight checked at your taekwondo school. Jumping High Kick competitors must fill in height and it will be checked at your TKD school.
5. WHERE: The competition will be held at Minett Hall at the ROC Dome Arena. 2695 East Henrietta Rd, Henrietta, NY 14467. Right off 390. Both East Henrietta Road, and Calkins Road have an entrance to Fair Ave. (Behind the Wegmans on Calkins Road) Signs will be posted at the entrances.
6. PARKING: There is a large parking lot directly in front of the building on Fair Ave. Both Calkins Road just past Wegmans and East Henrietta Road have an entrance to Fair Ave. You will see the large entrance with the Dome on one side and Minett Hall on the other. Signs will be posted.
7. AWARDS: All students will earn a Gold, Silver, or Bronze medal for participating in any of the six events. Students earning 1st Place in all three traditional events (Forms, Sparring, and Board Breaking) will earn the Five Foot Grand Champion Trophy. We order the highest quality awards for our events!
8. COACHING: Our staff is responsible for officiating and directing the competition. Parents will act as coaches for their children during the sparring event only. Fellow students or family members may coach adult competitors. Only one coach is allowed on the floor per contest. The coach’s job is to encourage and support the competitor in their match. Additional guidance during competition will be assumed by the referee, judges, instructors, and volunteers.
9. SPECTATORS: Minett Hall will have 1800 seats and 23,000 square feet of space! Seating for coaches and athletes will be directly next to the ring and spectator seats will be set up around each ring. Cost for spectators is $7 in advance. Purchase your tickets when you register and pick them up at your next class. Admission is $12 on the day of the event. Everyone must purchase a ticket, except competitors and children 3 years old and under. *Cash and checks will be accepted for payment at the venue for admissions and food.*

11. FOOD: No food is permitted on the competition floor. Purchase your pizza lunch from Salvatore’s in Advance! $7 for two slices of pizza and 1 water bottle. Seating for lunch will be available in the lobby. Competitors may bring their own healthy snacks. Water bottles are strongly encouraged. 12. APPAREL & EQUIPMENT: New 2025 Tournament of Champions tee shirts and the latest MKTKD apparel will be available! Some sparring equipment will be available, but all sparring competitors must have all gear. *Cash and checks will be accepted for payment at the venue for admissions, apparel, and food.*

Each year we look for volunteers to help our Tournament Committee and are always looking for new people. We would love to have adult students and/or parents join our team. Meeting is mandatory for all volunteers. Volunteers must be 15+ years old. Volunteers will receive Staff T-shirts and assignments during the meeting.

EVENTS and SCORING
BOARD BREAKING COMPETITION RULES & SCORING
Board breaking competition is for all belt ranks. Students will be placed into divisions of four competitors. One 1st place, one 2nd place and two 3rd place medals will be awarded in each division. All board breaking competitors will break two wooden boards. All competitors must execute one upper body technique (i.e. palm heel strike, hammer fist, forearm hit, inside neck hit) and one kicking technique (i.e. front, side, axe, back). All Taekwondo techniques are allowed, as long as your instructor deems the technique safe. Board breaking competitors will be judged on; number of attempts to break, creativity, use of correct technique, accuracy of technique, yelling on movements, overall presentation, balance and execution with power and speed. No props are allowed. Scores of 6.0 - 10 will be awarded to determine the winners. In the event of a tie for first place, competitors will receive 1 (one) additional board break to be scored head to head.
SPARRING COMPETITION RULES & SCORING
Sparring is for all belt ranks. Students will be placed into divisions of four competitors. One 1st place, one 2nd place and two 3rd place medals will be awarded in each division. The winner will be determined by the points during the sparring match. Sparring competitors must wear all protective gear during competition, no exceptions. Don’t forget your mouth guard and athletic supporter (males). During the sparring event, it is common to combine different belt ranks as size and ability are most important in determining a safe, competitive match. For example, white and yellow belts will be combined. Yellow and green belts may be combined, etc. Sparring Scoring:
-A punch successfully delivered with the fist on the middle part of the chest protector is one point.
-A kick successfully delivered by the foot on the middle part of the chest protector is two points.
-Some teen and adult age divisions will be allowed to kick to the head (light contact without causing injury) will be awarded three points. Penalties will be given for holding, falling, going out of bounds, attacking unauthorized areas, attacking with illegal techniques, blocking with your leg, pushing intended to force opponent out of bounds, pushing intended to knock down your opponent, and conduct that is unsportsmanlike. Each penalty you commit is one point for your opponent. In the event of a tie after two rounds there will be one additional Golden Point round. The winner will be the first player to reach two points. If that rounds ends in a tie the judges will select a winner based on ring control, strategy, and aggression.
FORMS COMPETITION RULES & SCORING
Poomsae competition is for yellow belts and higher. Students will be placed into divisions of four competitors. One 1st place, one 2nd place and two 3rd place medals will be awarded in each division. Forms will be judged on: correct execution of the motions and degree of proficiency. Judges will score based on: executing powerful motions, overall presentation, balance, focused eye motions, having good pace and rhythm of motions, having accurate targets and proper breathing & yelling. Each pair of competitors will perform their form. After the form is complete judges will grade the competitors. All ranks will compete in a head to head format, with the winner advancing.
*Yellow and Green belts must choose one of the following forms: Bon Il-Jang, Bon Ye-Jang or Bon Sam-Jang
*Blue and Purple belts must choose one of the following forms: TaeGuek Il-Jang, Ye-Jang, Sam-Jang or Sa-Jang
*Red and Brown belts must choose one of the following forms: TaeGuek Oh-Jang, Yuke-Jang, Chil-Jang or Pal-Jang
*Black belts MUST perform the Dan level form for their level: 1ST Degree = Koryo, 2nd = Keumgang, 3rd = Taebaek,
4th = Pyongwon *Students are allowed to perform a lower poomsae if they recently belt tested (New Blue and Red belts only). Students are not permitted to perform a higher poomsae.
NUNCHUKS COMPETITION RULES & SCORING
Nunchcuks competition is for all belts. Students will be placed into divisions of four competitors. One 1st place, one 2nd place and two 3rd place medals will be awarded in each division. Nunchuks will be judged on: demonstrating basic nunchcuk skills (spins, figure 8s, switching hands, etc.) and basic Taekwondo kicks. Higher level skills, acrobatics, presentation, and yells will also be scored. Each pair of competitors will have 35 seconds to perform their routine. Competitors will receive a 10 second countdown to know when the time is up. All ranks will compete in a head to head format, with the winner advancing. Competitors will not be allowed to use multiple pairs of nunchcuks.
JUMPING HIGH COMPETITION KICK RULES & SCORING
Jumping High Kick competition is for all belts. Students will be placed into divisions of four competitors. One 1st place, one 2nd place, and two 3rd place medals will be awarded in each division. Rules: You must jump and strike the target with your foot. Land on both feet without falling down (one hand touching the floor is allowed. Any other part of the body touching the floor is considered falling). Falling is counted as a “miss” even if you hit the target. Two attempts per each height. A successful kick will strike the bottom of the target with any part of the foot below the ankle. Tiebreaker will be determined by height of the competitors (shorter competitor will be awarded the winner).
SPEED KICKING COMPETITION RULES & SCORING
Speed Kicking competition is for all belts. Students will be placed into divisions of four competitors. One 1st place, one 2nd place and two 3rd place medals will be awarded in each division. Rules: Competitors will have 30 seconds to perform as many kicks as they can striking the target. The target must be at least belt level (hip level) and competitors must touch the floor with the foot after each kick. One judge will count the kicks and one judge will count penalties. Penalties: kicking in the air without touching the floor, not making contact with the target, kicking before or after the referee’s instructions, using the other leg after starting with one leg. Penalties will be taken off the total number of kicks counted. The person who performs the highest number of kicks in the entire division is the winner. Multiple gold or silver medals will be awarded in the event of a tie.

MKTKD guarantees 100% of money raised through MKTKD events on behalf of the fund will go directly into supporting post high school education for MKTKD members. This is a great way to support our youth who live through the principles of Taekwondo!
What is a 50/50 raffle? Half of the money collected will go into the MKTKD Scholarship Fund, the other half will go to one lucky person at the event!

The MKTKD Scholarship Program aims to encourage MKTKD students who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the tenets of Taekwondo, both inside and outside of the dojang, to continue pursuing their long-term goals after high school.
Each year we will award three scholarships with eligibility open to current MKTKD students who are rising juniors and rising seniors. The Debbi Stark Award and multiple other scholarships will be awarded each year. Master Kyle Rand and Master Kristina Chang created this vision as their 5th Degree Black Belt Masters Project.
We have awarded $76,000 in scholarships since 2018!
