Hetki tunkeutuu syvälle sisälle, sitten sulaa hiljaa pois.
Työskentelyni alkaa siitä ohimenevästä hetkestä ennen kuin sanat saavat muodon.
Nämä hiljaiset hetket tunkeutuvat syvälle sisimpäämme ja hitaasti niistä tulee muistoja. Vastausten tarjoamisen sijaan teokseni muotoilevat kysymyksiä, jotka saavat vastakaikua jokaisen katsojan omista muistoista ja tuntemuksista, avaten mahdollisuuksia uusille kokemuksille.

Ken Matsubara (s. 1949 Tokiossa) on japanilainen taiteilija, joka työskentelee pääasiassa videotaiteen parissa. "Moon, no thought of reflection. Water, no thought of reflecting." (suom. ”Kuu, ei ajatusta heijastuksesta. Vesi, ei ajatusta heijastamisesta.”) on Matsubaran ensimmäinen yksityisnäyttely Suomessa. Helsinki Contemporaryssa nähdään häneltä uusi paikkasidonnainen videoinstallaatio sekä esineitä ja liikkuvaa kuvaa yhdisteleviä teoksia.

Ken Matsubara käsittelee taiteessaan muistoja ja tarinoita, joihin kaikki voimme samaistua taustastamme riippumatta. Matsubara on kiinnostunut siitä, miten muisti voi ulottua yksilön kokemuksen ulkopuolelle ja resonoida sukupolvien ja eri kulttuurien välillä. Hänen hillityt ja meditatiiviset teoksensa pohtivat aikaa ja olemisen katoavaisuutta sekä esineisiin kätkettyjä näkymättömiä voimia.

Matsubara on järjestänyt yksityisnäyttelyitä ja osallistunut museonäyttelyihin Japanissa ja kansainvälisesti 1980-luvulta lähtien. Hänen teoksiaan on merkittävissä kokoelmissa Euroopassa, Yhdysvalloissa ja Aasiassa.
Hänen teoksiaan on paraikaa esillä myös EMMA Espoon modernin taiteen museon näyttelyssä Nykyaikaa etsimässä: Juurettomuudesta, joka on avoinna helmikuuhun 2027 asti.

Welcome to the opening of Ken Matsubara’s solo exhibition "Moon, no thought of reflection. Water, no thought of reflecting." on Thursday October 1 from 5 to 7 pm!

Ken Matsubara (b. 1949 in Tokyo) is a Japanese artist who primarily works with video art. "Moon, no thought of reflection. Water, no thought of reflecting." is Matsubara’s first solo exhibition in Finland. At Helsinki Contemporary, visitors will be able to experience a new site-specific video installation by the artist, as well as works combining objects and moving image.

Ken Matsubara’s work addresses memories and histories to which we can all relate, regardless of our backgrounds. Matsubara is interested in how memory can extend beyond individual experience, resonating across generations and different cultures. His understated and meditative works reflect on time and the transience of being, as well as the invisible forces and collective memory invested in objects.

Ken Matsubara has held solo exhibitions and participated in museum shows in Japan and internationally since the 1980s. His works are in major collections in Europe, USA, and Asia.
His works are currently on view also in EMMA Espoo Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition In Search of the Present: On Rootlessness, on view until February 2027.
