- **Event Description**: Sunspots may look like dark spots on the Sun, but they are signs of powerful magnetic forces deep inside it. In this talk, we’ll explore what sunspots are and how they change over time as part of the Sun’s magnetic cycle.

We’ll look just below the Sun’s surface, where hot gas rises and sinks in a process called convection. This constant churning, along with the Sun’s rotation, helps create and shape the Sun’s magnetic field. When these magnetic fields break through the surface, they form sunspots.

You’ll learn how motion inside the Sun leads to an 11-year cycle of sunspots, why the Sun’s magnetic field flips, and how these changes can affect Earth and the space around us.

Dr. Kelly Cline is a Professor of Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics, Engineering, and Computer Science at Carroll College in Helena, Montana. He teaches undergraduate astronomy, physics, and mathematics and is well known for his engaging and popular public lectures on astronomy, physics, and mathematics.

Dr. Cline holds a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of Colorado Boulder and has served as a visiting lecturer at several 
universities in Scotland and Ireland.
