- **Event Description**: Na het grote succes van zijn trio-optreden in 2023 zijn we blij om Lew Tabackin opnieuw in de club te mogen verwelkomen. Een concert van Tabackin is een levende afspraak met de jazzgeschiedenis. Op z’n 85ste heeft de Amerikaanse saxofonist en fluitist nog niets aan kracht en creativiteit ingeboet.  

Lew Tabackin werd geboren in 1940 in Philadelphia. Naast een opvallende verschijning, is hij een uitzonderlijk dubbeltalent. Hij is een van de weinige jazzmuzikanten die erin geslaagd is om op twee verschillende instrumenten een geheel andere identiteit te ontwikkelen. “You have to see him in concert,” aldus Mathieu Perez van Jazz Hot, “with his big sound, his power, roar in long tenor saxophone solos full of energy, put his head forward, raise his knees, tap his foot, then switch to the flute and change his physical posture, become aerial and draw on the Japanese tradition. Two musicians live in Lew Tabackin: a saxophonist, who has his roots in Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Sonny Rollins, and a flautist, who draws inspiration from classical music and ancient oriental traditions.” 

Tabackin begon zijn carrière in de bigbands van onder anderen Cab Calloway, Maynard Ferguson en Thad Jones/Mel Lewis. Een groot deel van zijn loopbaan echter bracht hij door aan de zijde van pianiste en componiste Toshiko Akiyoshi, tevens zijn echtgenote, met wie hij in 1973 de Toshiko Akiyoshi – Lew Tabackin Big Band oprichtte. Met dat orkest speelde hij in 1981 voor het eerst voor de Hnita Jazz Club, op locatie in de parochiezaal van Heist-Station. In totaal nam Tabackin meer dan 50 platen op als leider en co-leider, maar ook op een album als “Small Change” (1976) van Tom Waits is hij te horen. 

De band waarmee hij naar de Hnita-Hoeve komt, is zijn vaste trio, met op contrabas onze eigenste Philippe Aerts, die in New York deel uitmaakte van het Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra en onlangs nog in de club speelde met het Bert Joris Quartet, en op drums de Franse hardbopspecialist Mourad Benhammou.
