- **Event Description**: Join us for the screening and discussion of Gentle Angry Women on the Greenham Common Women's Peace MovementAbout this EventJoin us for a screening and discussion of Gentle Angry Women on Friday, 20 March 2026, at 19:00, at the JHB 308 (Kennedy Lecture Theatre), John Henry Brookes Building, Oxford Brookes University. This documentary follows a new generation of young female activists uncovers a powerful, often overlooked chapter of women's history and the alarming reality of British nuclear armament. As they navigate the complexities of teenage life and social activism, three young women, Poppy, Xanthe, and Evie, embark on a journey of discovery. They follow in the footsteps of over 30,000 women who, forty years earlier, united in peaceful, liberating protest: the remarkable Greenham Common Women's Peace Movement. This coming-of-age documentary, driven by intergenerational dialogue, bridges past courage and present hope, speaking to the need for action and change. The film bridges past courage with present hope through intergenerational dialogue and stories of peaceful protest.Following the screening, Dr Michele Paule will moderate a discussion with filmmaker Barbara Santi and activists Nuala Young and Di McDonald. This event is open to everyone above 12 years old.___________________________Dr Michele Paule is an Associate Professor in Gender, Audiences, and Culture at Oxford Brookes UniversityBarbara Santi is an award-winning collaborative documentary/film maker and producer using film and social media for positive social change. At the heart of her films are powerful cinematic stories focusing on socially driven narratives to raise underrepresented people’s voices.Nuala Young is a mother, teacher, and long-standing peace activist who has facilitated the Oxford Peace Campaign since the early 1980s. She played a central role in organising the five-day blockade of the Upper Heyford USAF base and participated in the Greenham Common Peace Camp. Her activism led to her arrest alongside other Oxford women for non-payment of fines, resulting in a Pr*son sentence at Cookham Wood. Beyond her local work, she spent sabbatical years in Bristol and California while maintaining her commitment to global peace efforts. She remains active with the monthly Aldermaston Women’s Peace Camp, where she recently helped organise the 40th anniversary celebrations for marchers from Wales.Di McDonald began her career in community activism as a child and later became a key figure in opposing US Cruise Missile deployment at Greenham Common. She helped mobilise national resistance through Families Against the Bomb and Cruisewatch, where she tracked missile convoys to expose military plans. Her activism included multiple arrests and Pr*son stays as she successfully campaigned for the disarmament of Cruise missiles and nuclear ships. In 2000, she founded the Nuclear Information Project and received a WWF Environment and Media Award in 2003 for her work. She credits her extensive achievements to the massive support of her family, friends, and six children.Oxfordshire Peace Campaign is a coalition of Oxfordshire Peace Groups, including Oxford CND, and Faringdon, Abingdon and Kidlington Peace Groups. They work together to highlight USAF bases Croughton and Fairford, both under 25 miles from Oxford, and collaborate on other actions.Check out our full festival program here at Oxford Human Rights Festival,Support the festival by donating to usLooking forward to seeing you there!
