The batizado, a cornerstone tradition in the vibrant world of Capoeira, is a rich and meaningful ceremony that signifies the formal induction of new students into the broader Capoeira community. It is a joyous celebration of their first steps on their journey of learning, growth, and self-discovery, symbolized by the awarding of their first cordão (cord/belt). This time-honored ritual, originally conceived by Mestre Bimba, the father of contemporary Capoeira, was once a more intimate and personal affair, conducted within the familiar setting of a regular class amongst fellow students and instructors.
In the modern era, the batizado has evolved into an energetic community event that includes the Troca de Cordões, a parallel ceremony where older students are acknowledged for their commitment by receiving their next cordão. It is a multifaceted gathering that often features esteemed guest teachers from other groups and lineages, who generously share their knowledge and expertise by leading workshops, participating in rodas (Capoeira circles), playing traditional Capoeira music, and contributing to the overall strengthening and cohesion of the global Capoeira community.
The batizado is, in essence, a celebration of the Capoeira community, a reminder that while each student's journey is unique, they are all connected by a shared passion for this beautiful and captivating art form.
