- **Event Name**: The Legacy of Percy Grainger: Celebrating 40th Anniversary of The Grainger Wind Symphony
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 29 Aug, 2026 at 06:15 pm – Sat, 29 Aug, 2026 at 10:00 pm
- **Event Description**: The Grainger Wind Symphony is celebrating the legacy of Percy Grainger, our namesake, in a concert beginning at 7.00pm, by performing 3 Australian women composers - Mirrie Hill, Katharine Parker and Mona McBurney conducted by Tracy Videon who is researching as PhD candidate. Grainger was very supportive of emerging composers.

Then is a new work Grainger's World composed by emerging composer Hayden Taylor who was a composer in residence at the Grainger Museum at the University of Melbourne. In 5 movements, the work is inspired by Grainger's compositional attitudes and his life.

Shane Walterfang, Associate Conductor of the GWS, will conduct Grainger's Hill Song No.2 which represents Grainger progressive idiomatic wind scoring.

Roland Yeung, Music Director, will conduct the Lincolnshire Posy, a bunch of "musical wildflowers" based on sone collected in Lincolnshire and dedicated to the old folksingers "who sang so sweetly to me". Posy is a cornerstone whose orchestration and compositional treatment helped establish the artistic legitimacy of the wind ensemble.

The concert program finishes with the playing (and singing the words of Danny Boy) of Irish Tune From County Derry. We invite any players or committee member to come one stage with their instrument to join in as a member of the 40th Anniversary Band. Bring your instrument and let your section manager know so we can arrange space and sheet music.

The concert is preceded by a pre-concert talk, included in the ticket price, by Dr Sarah Kirby, Grainger Fellow of the Grainger Museum, University of Melbourne Museum and Collections. Dr Kirby has just released a new book Inventing Percy Grainger. 6.15pm to 6.45pm
